YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE COMMUNITY

Bobby Brennan..................................................

Even before Bobby Brennan began his first juice fast, his community of family and friends was there to support him. About eight years ago, when he began approaching 500 pounds (35 stone), a close friend held what he called “an intervention” to see what could be done to help. Since then, the support has only grown, going from weekly meetings at Weight Watchers to an online community of juicers that he says “has made all the difference.”

Bobby, 41, is a professional musician who plays the bass. Unless he is on tour, playing with a band, or in the orchestra pit for a Broadway play, he lives in Orlando, Florida. Eight years ago, when the dial showed an astonishing 494 pounds, he thought the scale he was on was broken.

That’s when friend and fellow musician Michael Andrews gave him “the talk,” says Bobby. “He just sat me down in the hotel room—we were out on tour at the time—and he said, ‘What are you doing? What’s going on?’ He didn’t talk to me in a degrading way, like ‘Hey, you’re getting huge.’ He just said, ‘What’s going on here? Let’s correct this.’”

Bobby knew his health was in danger. He was having a hard time carrying his bass, his back hurt, he was sweating like crazy, and he was constantly out of breath. So he joined Weight Watchers, which took him down to about 350 pounds (25 stone). That’s when he “plateaued” and couldn’t seem to lose any more weight. And that’s when his friend Michael also came across Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and told him he should watch it.

“I was still working hard at losing weight, and doing this and that, but I’d gotten stuck. Then I got into juicing and that really changed a lot. That changed everything,” he says. Among other things, he learned about whole foods and a plant-based diet. “Before that it was, ‘Hey, this is 97 percent fat-free, so it must be good.’ But it was a processed food with processed sugar, and that’s no good. Then I got into the juice.”

Among other things, Bobby immediately joined several online communities. “I joined a couple of juice groups, a lot of them big fans of Joe. I joined because when you’re doing this type of journey, we’re all in it together. Sure, we’re all on our own journey, but at the same time, we all need to support one another.”

That was just the beginning of the help he got from friends, family, and even coworkers. At the time he did his sixty-day juice fast, Bobby was playing with the orchestra for a soon-tobe-Broadway production called Enchanted.

“We were doing a twelve-week run; we had just started, and I was living with two cast members, two girls that were in the show,” he says. “I explained that I was going to be juicing for the whole run. I told them, ‘Hey ladies, I’ll try not to disturb you, but I’m going to be juicing.
